James 5:16, reads, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much”. What an amazing and powerful scripture that reveals God’s trusting and wonderful promise for the righteous. This is one of God’s many promises and it should motivate and encourage us to pray and pray more often. Many wonder will their prayers avail much. The answer is, yes! The word effectual means the production or capability of producing an intended or desired result. When we go to God the Father in prayer, we must first understand who God is. He is not a genie in a bottle that we can pull up when it is convenient to have our wishes granted. He is a mighty God and the effectiveness of our prayers does not rely on how good we are, but who God is. Many pray with great ability and fluidity in their words, but the ability is not in how well we pray, it is in the power of God and His ability. The word fervent is described as having or displaying passionate intensity. In times of old the word was used as describing something that was hot, burning or glowing. Are we praying with power and ferocity? When was the last time you or I prayed with tears to God for the condition of this world or the growth of the Kingdom? God says the effectual fervent prayers of the righteous avails much. Prayer is a blessing from God that gives us the ability to reach his throne and make our petitions known. Not for just the things we desire, but also to develop an ongoing relationship with God the Father. When we pray our foundation should be based in the word of God, therefore our prayers must reflect righteousness. God cannot touch sin because His very nature in every attribute is that of righteousness. The bible reads in John 9:31 that God does not hear sinners. “We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, God listens to him”. It is God who has drawn the line in the sand by which he measures all human righteousness. Our faith should be strengthened when we know that God has never reneged on a promise and that he wants us to depend on him for all our needs. Only when we see and understand our great need for God's presence and power in our lives will we turn everything over to him. Let’s move forward with a renewed attitude towards prayer for “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much”.
