A few months ago I was persuaded by poor health and my doctors advice to undergo heart catheterization to see if there was a problem. Two blockages were found, one artery was 95% blocked and another one had 85%! I came through the procedure, plus two stents, with no difficulties whatsoever. My prayers of thanksgiving to my God for His guiding the surgeons hands. I think of the words of scripture which ring out on my behalf as they have probably for many others in centuries past, “Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.” 3 John 1:2
There’s no doubt I will be encouraged to follow a different life style from before and strive to keep my health in check through diet and exercise. I’m also sure many of you who also must watch your health will agree with what Mark Twain said when he penned almost a century ago these words, “The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not.” It’s not easy, is it folk’s? The temptations are ever before us and it's so easy to slip right back into that “old routine” once again.
Our health is very important in many ways. Not just physically, but also in the spiritual area. John was able to say of those to whom he wrote that their health might continue but sometimes, that’s just not the case. It could be some of us may fall into dire need for medical attention and even others drift sooner than expected into that "eternal sleep." John’s wishes were that they continue in health of their body, but notice he was able to add confidently also that their health was prospering in another way, in a spiritual fashion. They may or may not have had good healthy bodies, but for sure their souls were in good shape, which is far better!
We all need to take care for ourselves in a balanced way, showing both physical and heavenly traits, for both are Gods possession, 1Corinthians 6:20 “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” When we do the above we can be sure that our example will affect the world, as well as ourselves. Psalms 67: 2-5 “That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.
