Proverbs 30:5 “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”
I can remember a moment in my life when just a fraction of a second could have made all the difference between living or dying. It all depended on whether I would put into action all the previous training I received about “booby traps.” For the novice, a booby trap is a "BOMB," and if activated, will render its victims maimed or worse! My shield and protection was simply common sense!
The French canteen looked innocent enough (and by the way it was a souvenir of great value, a relic from the French Indochina war, 1947-1950). The item was just innocently lying there in the shallow stream only a arms length away from my grasp. I noticed though that the chain that holds the cap to the canteen was not visible. It was as if it had been dropped by accident into the waters and the cap sunk into the gentle flowing waters and was submerged just beneath the sand. We called up the demolition team and sure enough when probed it exploded with violent force. As the loud boom echoed into the air, my mind rushed back to my class instructor’s admonitions and warnings about "shiny trinkets/souvenirs" and temptations to pick up such items. Yes, my protection that day was based on pure true facts and knowledge; it was as if my teacher had held a mighty shield before me! I trusted and obeyed his instructions and months later I was spared another day. I do feel though, God was watching in the above example, I just did not realize it at that time.
Today all of us are only a heart beat away from death. Believe it or not, all of us are at war even now, and that battle is against SIN! We could kiss our family good bye as we head off for work and that could be the last time you see one another. In James 4:13-15 we read and hopefully understand the brevity of life. This life, as you all know is full of those "booby traps" or “shiny trinkets," better known as temptation. It will lure us to sin, and one day sooner or later it will explode, and the end is not a pleasant one! We must not be maimed in this war; Satan only takes those who are tempted and are overcome with lust! James 1:15. Then the lust, when it hath conceived, brings sin: and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death.
We need to do spiritually what the young Marine did physically. His understanding during his training class on explosive devices had two ends. First, his on increase of knowledge; secondly, to enable himself to pass on that knowledge to others. Obey and remember the Instructors words! In Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Do you remember that old song? “Trust and obey, for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” See 1Timothy 4:10 for therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those that believe.” We must trust in our God and Savior, He is the very one who holds us all in His hands.
Dear friends, temptation is around every corner. Remember, all that glitters is not gold. God's riches are sure and steadfast, obey Him. Luke 6:46-48 "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Every one that cometh unto me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation upon the rock: and when a flood arose, the stream brake against that house, and could not shake it: because it had been well built."
